In December 2009, Guillermo García Calvo conducted the new production of Macbeth at the Vienna State Opera standing in for Daniele Gatti, shortly after having celebrated his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin with another new production in May 2009, La Cenerentola, that was followed by an overwhelming success among critics and the public.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Romanian Revolution of 1989, he conducted the Verdi Requiem at the Victory Square of Timisoara in December 2009 – a moving event for the country honoured by the participation of Herta Müller, Nobel Prize winner in Literature.
At the Aalto-Theater Essen, elected to the Best German Theatre of the Year by the German press, he conducted the reposition of I Puritani, and has been invited to conduct several performances of Nabucco and La Bohème, and the première of L’Elisir d’amore during the 2010/2011 season.

Guillermo García Calvo has always maintained a strong relation with the Vienna State Opera ever since he started working there in November 2003. He has conducted almost one hundred performances of opera for children, and, since 2007, numerous ballet performances. After his debut with Coppélia in October 2007, the Austrian newspaper Wiener Kronen Zeitung praised his exemplary manner of conducting, his vitality and good taste while respecting the dancers’ needs.

Up to now, M° García Calvo has been responsible for the musical preparation of more than 50 operas in the repertoire of the Vienna State Opera. Moreover, he has conducted more than 60 performances at the renowned opera house, interpreting titles such as Macbeth (Première), The Magic Flute, The Nutcracker, Mayerling, Anna Karenina and Swan Lake together with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra that acts as Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera.

Born in Madrid in 1978 Guillermo began his musical education at the age of seven. He concluded his musical studies at the University of Music in Vienna with a thesis on Parsifal and a performance of the Overture from Tannhäuser in the Großer Saal (Great hall) at the Wiener Musikverein. Between 2001 and 2002 he worked as assistant for Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra, during this time he was also the conductor for the student’s orchestra “Ciudad de Lucena” in Córdoba.

In March 2003 he celebrated his debut as opera conductor with a performance of Hansel and Gretel at the Schlosstheater, Schoenbrunn. On the occasion of the city of Oviedo’s third summer festival, in August 2006, Guillermo García Calvo was invited by Friedrich Haider to conduct the Orquesta Sinfónica Ciudad de Oviedo at the Teatro Campoamor. Cosme Marina wrote in the Spanish newspaper La Nueva España,
“The young Spanish conductor Guillermo surprised with his debut, showing profound knowledge of the works, a firm control of the orchestra and a lucid interpretation of the programme. A discovery.”

Future highlights during the 2010/2011 season include numerous performances at the Vienna State Opera (L’Elisir d’amore, Onegin, Don Quixote, Giselle), at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Lucia di Lammermoor, The Barber of Seville), as well as concerts with the Geneva Chamber Orchestra, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Malaga Philharmonic Orchestra and the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra.
